Chapter Twelve

HAZEL

I've spent a good deal of the day ignoring hungry looks and lingering touches. I've suffered plenty of brushes and prods and rubs and such throughout my life, but never to this degree. Something about Colby has my magic all...fidgety. Bouncing and twirling around. I didn't mean to zap my cup across the cafeteria when I went to reach for it, but it went flying just the same as soon as he made a comment about liking the style of my hair today.

All the shifty, cuddly tension boiling inside me makes me wish I had some sort of outlet to bleed this stress off.

He keeps staring at me. Keeps looking down his nose as though he can't seem to find a reason to take his focus off me. Or maybe that's just my inner optimist hoping against hope that maybe, just maybe, we're destined to be more than two civil partners.

"Are you all right?" he asks when I cover my face and sink down in my chair.

The longer the morning wears on, the more desperate my magic becomes for it to make a decision and settle down. Either go forward with that sexual need brewing between us or give me some freaking clarity so I don't embarrass myself any more than I already have.

I bite down on my lip and groan. "I'm fine."

"You've seemed a bit out of it today, that's all." He shrugs and leans over the table between us. His breakfast is half-eaten, and his coffee is abandoned on the opposite end. "You getting sick or something?"

I look up, exasperated. My knees knock his beneath the table. "Or something."

"If I didn't know any better," he tells me in a low, husky voice, "I'd say that you're distracted by something." I flash a little gritty smile, which, in turn, earns me a throaty laugh. He rubs his palms on his thighs and straightens up in his chair. "Listen, Hazel—"

"No need," I cut him off and give my head a shake. There's a twisting, knotting feeling in my gut that, before today, could've only been explained by too much food, or not enough, or menstrual cramps or hunger. What's the female equivalent to blue balls? Whatever it is, when I look at him smirking at me the way he is right now, I've got it. I'm tense. I've got energy to burn.

So, in order to do something about that burning sensation, I pick up my fork and collect a mouthful of eggs. And now I've got magical mayhem happening with each flick of my wrist. Barely, I manage to suppress it, but all the while, the tendrils of that bubbling power boil within me, looking for a way to get to him.

Aiming for him.

Feeling for him.

Colby's phone dings, and he clears his throat. "We've got Ben in the building."

Right. Ben. I got lost there for a second. Good thing I've got some good ol' fashioned cop sense to bring me back to the task at hand.

I tuck my head and stand.
